The very best of DIY

ByAnthony Vella

The Block is an institution when it comes to renovation shows on TV and the most recent All Stars program promises to showcase the very best of DIY.

Working on heritage-listed properties in Bondi, four couples have to upgrade a whole home while ensuring that the existing parts of the house are restored to their original conditions – with the winner of the series determined based on auction results.

Such a task consists of replacing 100-year-old tiles with their exact identical or giving them a bit of tender loving care to bring them to like-new condition.

As well as the tiles, switches and fittings also have to be replaced or given some elbow grease in addition to replacing any glass panes that have cracks in them.

Week one saw Josh and Jenna take the win for their fairly neutral front bedroom, which ensured any homebuyer could make that space their own.

Their clever use of colours and restoration of the fireplace saw them pocket the $5,000 cash prize.

Pipped at the post were the two tradies, Mark and Duncan, whose bold approach with wallpaper choices and furniture stylings saw them lose out by a single point.

DIY novices Phil and Amity came third with a respectable room, while Dan and Dani came a distant fourth for failing to follow heritage restoration guidelines and poor painting.
