RW Maroubra, St Vincent de Paul & CEO Sleepout

By Phillip Elmowy

When Sam White agreed to sleep on the street for a night, no one could have predicted that the opportunity would arise for Ray White Maroubra and in particular Leasing Consultant Michael Guirguis to accommodate a homeless student.

When Sam White agreed to sleep on the street for a night, no one could have predicted that the opportunity would arise for Ray White Maroubra and in particular Leasing Consultant Michael Guirguis to accommodate a homeless student.

Last week this unlikely group created an alliance to find a rental property for a homeless student, Krystal.

The story begins with Radio Shock Jock, Kyle Sandilands interviewing Krystal live on the radio about what it is like to live on the street. Krystal is currently studying at TAFE and living about 50 kilometres away in Campbelltown in a St Vincent’s hostel. Hearing Krystal’s story Kyle offered to pay rent on an apartment for 12 months, providing her with the opportunity to live in the city for a year so she can be closer to her preferred TAFE and can therefore can continue to progress her studies.

Enter Sam White and Ray White. Through the CEO Sleepout held in June, Sam met Ulie MacDonald, the current CEO of St Vincents de Paul. Combining our resources, we were able to provide Krystal with a list of available rental properties suiting her criteira from raywhite.com and from there we shortlisted what was available for Krystal to view on Saturday.

By Monday morning, Krystal had applied for a rental property which she had inspected with Michael Guirguis of Ray White Maroubra during the Saturday.

Michael had initially shown Krystal a one bedroom flat but had suggested another two bedroom property that was being painted and re-carpeted for the same price only slightly further out in location. Michael was able to process the application within 24 hours and Krystal now has a home of her own.

The greatest challenge that Krystal has faced in the past is being accepted for tenancy without a rental history or indeed any housing history of her own at all. Kyle’s generosity combined with the help of St Vincent de Paul and the work of Ray White have changed the opportunities for Krystal’s future.
